Profile Mr. Brian C. Dean serves as President of Gateway Florida, Inc., the State of Florida's new public-private joint venture promoting Florida's economic development through connectivity to Latin America and the Caribbean. Building on the work of Florida FTAA, Inc. (of which Mr. Dean was Executive Director), Gateway Florida works to promote the "Gateway of the Americas" franchise throughout the hemisphere and in the United States.
A career in U.S. - Latin America relations, coupled with experience and knowledge on Capitol Hill, has prepared Mr. Dean for his post at Gateway Florida, where he is responsible for overseeing the various hemispheric economic development and quality of life pillars that fall under the Gateway Florida umbrella. In addition, Mr. Dean raises public and private funds to support Gateway Florida's efforts to develop and implement strategies that build upon Florida's unique status as the "Gateway of the Americas." He also serves as the lead spokesperson and liaison with all board members and Florida communities interested in participating in this project.
Mr. Dean also currently serves as the U.S. Executive Director of the International Biofuels Commission, coordinating all Commission activities and fundraising efforts.
Prior to joining Florida FTAA, Mr. Dean worked from 1999- 2006 in Central and South America with the International Republican Institute (IRI). Mr. Dean's efforts led to the creation of a new pillar of democracy promotion at the IRI focused on advocating market-based approaches to poverty-alleviation.
Before IRI, Mr. Dean spent a decade in Washington, D.C. working in the United States House of Representatives. Serving as Chief of Staff to Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner. Mr. Dean also coordinated congressional campaigns and oversaw fundraising operations on a volunteer basis.
A Wisconsin native, Mr. Dean graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1989 with degrees in political science, Ibero-American Studies, and Portuguese. He is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.
Mr. Dean and his wife Wendy live in Miami with their three children: Henry, 10, Alexandra, 8, and Oscar, 5.
